The Challenge
ABB Solutions faced significant challenges in managing its supply chain for telecom customer equipment (modems, routers, access points, etc.), which involved manual processes, disparate systems, and a lack of real-time visibility. The company needed a scalable, adaptable, and efficient solution to handle millions of data points daily, integrate with their existing backend systems, and ensure smooth operations even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABB provides a customized supply chain management solution tailored to each of their client’s specific needs and requirements. Over the years, ABB Solutions developed extensive expertise in handling large volumes of data and integrating with various backend systems, such as SAP and Oracle. However, as their client base increased and the volume of information they processed grew exponentially, reaching millions of data points daily, they realized they needed a scalable, adaptable, and efficient system to handle the complexity.
Soliant partnered with ABB to develop a cloud-native solution on AWS that would meet the parameters outlined by ABB of speed, scale, scope, and security. The multi-faceted solution is scalable, adaptable, and performant, allowing ABB Solutions to handle the large-scale requirements of large telecom carriers, process millions of records daily, and quickly integrate with changing backend systems through rewritten APIs. This ensures efficient and resilient supply chain management even during challenging times that required them to adapt quickly to changing conditions in their industry.
The Solution
Soliant’s AWS certified developers designed a well-architected solution using AWS services that allowed ABB to be successful in the cloud, quickly. The solution allows ABB to efficiently manage their supply chain processes, including scheduling, staffing, inventory management, and quality control. The system can handle millions of data points daily, integrating seamlessly with other SAP and Oracle systems. This provides ABB with real-time visibility, improved efficiency, and the ability to adapt to changing requirements.
At the core of the solution that Soliant developed is a proprietary auto-scaling technology for FileMaker WebDirect worker machines which is built on the flexibility of EC2, EventBridge, API Gateway and Lambda, and delivers on all pillars of the Well-Architected Framework. ABB immediately began to realize significant cost savings upon the launch of the solution, and the users of the solution recognized improved performance on day one. Administrators at ABB can have granular control of resources and have visibility into the performance of the system by using the customized portal that Soliant developed for them.
Next Steps
ABB Solutions plans to continue innovating its supply chain management solution by integrating with cutting-edge robotic sorting technology and RFID tools to further optimize warehouse operations and reduce manual labor. ABB plans to work closely with Soliant and AWS to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of these new technologies. Furthermore, ABB Solutions aims to explore additional AWS tools for IoT and real-time performance monitoring for web direct worker machines to enhance their solution.
